Eski Çoban Köpeği Fotoğrafları, Türkiye, 1932 Old Shepherd Dog Photos, Turkey, 1932 (click on pictures to enlarge)
Thank you to Serkan Karaahmetoğlu for permission to use these photos. The photos are from Kastamonu/Devrekani, Turkey, discovered very recently by Mr. Karaahmetoğlu while he was cleaning the old hunting lodge library.
Mr. Karaahmetoğlu interviewed the 61 year old head of the hunting club about the photos. He was the oldest member of the club able to give information. Reportedly, in Turkey, the shepherd dogs were not normally used as hunting dogs. Most people used small hunting dogs on the hunt, but in this area, along with the small dogs they were also using the shepherd dogs for rousing hogs out of their hiding places so that the small hunting dogs could chase them toward the hunters. Also, the shepherd dogs might have fought with the hogs until the hunters reached them. Normally small hunting dogs could get the hogs from their hiding places, but when the hogs were large and wouldn't move, the shepherd dogs could assist in moving the hogs because the shepherd dogs have a big bark as well as the ability to attack the hogs.
